There's a version of this story that gets told as a generational conflict — the old guard clinging to SSB while the youngsters chase shiny digital toys. That framing is mostly rubbish. The operators making the move to digital voice in Australia aren't doing it to be trendy. They're doing it because, for specific use cases, digital modes genuinely work better.
That said, "better" isn't universal, and the digital landscape is fragmented in ways that can be genuinely confusing for someone just starting to explore the options. Let's cut through it.
Why Digital Voice Is Gaining Ground Here
Australia presents some unique challenges for radio communication. Vast distances, sparse population, and a geography that doesn't do radio operators any favours. SSB has served the community well for decades, but it comes with limitations that digital modes sidestep neatly.
The most obvious advantage is audio quality. Digital voice, when the signal is there, sounds dramatically cleaner than SSB. There's no tuning, no sideband drift, no fighting with atmospheric noise. You either have a solid connection or you don't — and when you do, the audio is essentially telephone-quality.
The second big driver is connectivity. DMR, D-STAR, and Fusion all support linking over the internet via hotspots and reflectors, which means an operator in Kalgoorlie with a handheld radio can connect to a talkgroup that includes operators in Brisbane, Auckland, and London simultaneously. For a country where the nearest fellow ham might be 200 kilometres away, that's not a trivial benefit.
The third factor — and this one matters particularly in the emergency communications context — is that digital modes can carry data alongside voice. GPS coordinates, text messages, and status information can all be embedded in a DMR or D-STAR transmission. For WICEN operations or EMCOMM deployments, that capability has real operational value.
The Main Players: What Each Mode Actually Offers
DMR (Digital Mobile Radio)
DMR is the most widely deployed digital voice standard in Australia, partly because it originated in commercial two-way radio and the infrastructure is well-established. The Brandmeister network in particular has strong Australian coverage, with multiple servers and a large community of active users.

The audio quality is generally considered slightly inferior to DMR and Fusion — it uses a lower bit-rate codec — but the system's data capabilities are mature and the reflector network (DExtra and DPlus) is extensive. If you're already an Icom user, the integration with their handheld and mobile lineup is seamless.
The downside is cost. D-STAR capable Icom radios carry a significant price premium over equivalent analogue units, and there's no real budget option. Expect to spend $400–$600 AUD minimum for a capable D-STAR handheld.

Yaesu System Fusion (C4FM)
Fusion is Yaesu's answer to the digital voice question, and it's arguably the most beginner-friendly of the three. The WIRES-X network provides internet linking, the audio quality using the AMBE+2 codec is excellent, and Yaesu's automatic mode detection (AMS) means a Fusion radio will still work on analogue FM if it encounters a non-digital repeater.
Fusion has gained strong traction in Australia, partly because Yaesu has been aggressive in offering subsidised repeater hardware to clubs. There are now Fusion-capable repeaters in most populated regions, and the community is active.
The cost sits between D-STAR and DMR — mid-range Yaesu handhelds with Fusion capability run $300–$500 AUD, and the learning curve is gentler than DMR's codeplug nightmare.

What About Hotspots?
A hotspot is a small personal node — typically a Raspberry Pi-based device running software like Pi-Star or MMDVM — that connects your digital radio to the internet-linked network via Wi-Fi. For operators in areas without digital repeater coverage, a hotspot is essentially a mandatory accessory.
The good news is they're relatively affordable. A basic MMDVM hotspot board plus a Pi Zero will cost you $80–$120 AUD, and Pi-Star is free open-source software. The configuration takes a few hours to get right, but there's a huge amount of documentation available and the Australian amateur radio community on forums and Facebook is generally helpful.
One caveat: hotspots are technically low-power repeaters, and their use is subject to your licence conditions. Stick to the simplex frequencies designated for hotspot use in your state.
The Honest Trade-Offs
Digital modes aren't without their frustrations. The biggest one is fragmentation — DMR, D-STAR, and Fusion are not interoperable without additional bridging software. If your local club is on Fusion and your mate interstate is on DMR, you're not talking directly without some middleware in between.
There's also the coverage cliff. Unlike SSB, where a weak signal is still a partial signal, digital voice tends to fail hard. A marginal signal that would give you readable (if rough) audio on SSB will give you nothing but digital artifacts on DMR. In remote areas without hotspot internet access, this can be a real limitation.
And for those involved in emergency communications: don't abandon analogue entirely. When infrastructure fails and internet connectivity goes with it, your analogue FM capability is what keeps you talking. Digital voice is an excellent complement to analogue, not a replacement.
Making the Choice
If you're leaning toward digital voice and you're primarily motivated by local community activity, find out what your nearest club or repeater group is running and match that. Ecosystem matters more than technical specs when you're trying to actually have conversations.
If you're primarily interested in internet-linked communication and want the most active global community, DMR via Brandmeister is probably your best entry point despite the steeper learning curve.
If you want the simplest, most polished experience and you're already in the Yaesu ecosystem, Fusion is a natural progression.
And if you're heavily invested in Icom gear and value mature data capabilities, D-STAR is a perfectly solid choice despite the cost.
The shift to digital in Australian amateur radio isn't a revolution — it's a gradual, practical evolution. The noise floor isn't going anywhere, but with the right setup, you can leave it well behind.
